Sunrise Mass - Ola Gjeilo

Carl Nielsen (1865-1931) was a Danish composer, conductor and violinist. He wrote the Kleine Suite for Strings, Op.1 in 1888, when he was only 22. The piece was written originally as a string quintet but Nielsen re-worked it into a nonet at the suggestion of his mentor and teacher, Niels Gade. Nielsen composed six symphonies, a wind Quintet and concertos for violin, flute and clarinet. His Opera Maskarade and many of his songs have become an integral part of the Danish heritage. He composed between 1887 and 1925. During the 1960’s Nielson’s works gained international popularity when they were championed by Leonard Bernstein, among others.

George Enescu (1881-1955) was a Romanian composer, violinist, pianist ,conductor and teacher. He wrote his first work of significant length, Romanian Land, at age 5. He was the youngest student ever admitted into the Vienna Conservatory at age 7. Enescu presented his first mature work, Poema Romana, in Paris at the age of 16. Much of his work was influenced by Romanian folk music. His work included symphonies, suites for orchestra, an opera, OEdipe, and many chamber music pieces, including the Wind Decet, or Dixtuor as it is known in French. The Decet was first performed in 1906.

Ola Gjeilo (born 1978) is a Norwegian composer and pianist who currently lives in Manhattan. The Sunrise Mass is one of his major compositions for strings and choir. His other major works for choir and orchestra include Dreamweaver and The River. He is also featured as a pianist on various recordings .
